When are neuropsychological assessments helpful?

  • If a person has been experiencing a change in their memory and thinking skills over an extended period of time, such as several months, and they cannot attribute these changes to a known cause.
  • If a person has been involved in a traumatic accident, such as a car accident, fall or assault, and they need to determine the effects of the incident on their current brain functioning.  They may also want to know what amount of recovery they can expect going forward and what kind of time frame can they expect for recovery.
  • If a person has experienced a stroke or other similar type of cerebrovascular accident and they want to determine the effects on their current brain functioning. They may also want to measure the amount of recovery 6 months to 1 year later.

Do I need a referral?

Yes. Referrals from your General Practitioner or Specialist are necessary before seeking a neuropsychological assessment.  Your doctor can help you decide whether you think an assessment is necessary.

Is Neuropsychological Assessment covered by Medicare or private health funds?

Medicare does not currently cover neuropsychological assessments.  Some private health funds may cover a portion of the costs involved in having an assessment.  You will need to contact your health fund to determine what type of cover they provide.
